چکیده

X-ray radiation is widely used in medical and industrial applications. The basic design of the x-ray tube has not changed significantly in the last century. In this paper, we demonstrate that medical diagnostic x-ray radiation can be generated using a carbon nanotube (CNT) based field-emission cathode. The device can readily produce both continuous and pulsed x-ray with a programmable waveform and repetition rate. A total emission current of 28 mA was obtained from a 0.2 cm area CNT cathode. The x-ray intensity is sufficient to image human extremity at 14 kVp and 180 mAs. Pulsed x-ray with a repetition rate greater than 100 kHz was readily achieved by programming the gate voltage. The CNT-based cold-cathode x-ray technology can potentially lead to portable and miniature x-ray sources for industrial and medical applications.

Direct Synthesis of Carbon Nanotube Field Emitters on Metal Substrate for Open-Type X-ray Source in Medical Imaging

We report the design, fabrication and characterization of a carbon nanotube enabled open-type X-ray system for medical imaging. We directly grew the carbon nanotubes used as electron emitter for electron gun on a non-polished raw metallic rectangular-rounded substrate with an area of 0.1377 cm² through a plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition system. The stable field emission properties with...

A vacuum-sealed miniature X-ray tube based on carbon nanotube field emitters

A vacuum-sealed miniature X-ray tube based on a carbon nanotube field-emission electron source has been demonstrated. The diameter of the X-ray tube is 10 mm; the total length of the tube is 50 mm, and no external vacuum pump is required for the operation. The maximum tube voltage reaches up to 70 kV, and the X-ray tube generates intense X-rays with the air kerma strength of 108 Gy·cm2 min-1. I...

Transmission-type microfocus x-ray tube using carbon nanotube field emitters

A microfocus x-ray tube that can generate x rays with the focal spot size less than 5 m has been demonstrated using carbon nanotube CNT field emitters. A CNT cathode on a sharp tungsten tip, a magnetic solenoid lens, and a transmission-type x-ray target were adopted for the microfocus x-ray tube. The design characteristics and the operation performance of the microfocus x-ray tube are presented...

High-performance field-emission electron gun using a reticulated vitreous carbon cathode

Proof-of-concept experimental results stemming from beam simulations for a microfocus electron gun are presented. The simulations demonstrate the potential to produce 4 mA of current through a 40m-diameter spot, at an energy of 30 keV, emitted from a 1-mm-diameter cathode with low energy spread and high brightness. The experimental realization, scaled down for practicality, but consistent with ...

Electron field emission from transparent multiwalled carbon nanotube sheets for inverted field emission displays

Strong, conducting, transparent carbon nanotube sheets were prepared by solid-state draw from well-ordered, aligned multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) forests [Zhang et al., 2005] [1]. Study of electron field emission from such transparent MWCNT sheets shows threshold fields of less than 0.5 V/lm with current densities high enough for display applications. Step-like field emission current incr...
